The World of RPGs

Overview

This podcast is about tabletop role-playing games around the world. In every episode, I interview RPG enthusiasts and professionals from a non-English speaking country about what games they play, what unique RPGs exist in their country, and how new people get into the hobby. Interviewees include regular gamers, club organizers, game shop owners, creators of actual play videos, RPG authors, and gaming studios.  While some places are known for their large role-playing scene and have a lot of local RPG systems, other regions of the world have smaller scenes and might not even have a single RPG in the local language. Every regular episode ends with a teaser for the next country – an excerpt from an actual play recording in that country’s language. The aim of this podcast is to broaden our horizon and find out about RPGs from all over the world. Enjoy!

Sci-fi
Sufficiently Advanced is a transhuman roleplaying game of the far future. Humanity has been reconstructed by time and technology. Wield incredible technological enhancements and thousands of years of expertise, or the ability to mold the story of the game. Play a digital intelligence with remote-controlled robot drones, a diplomatic team that shares a group-mind, a soldier infused with nanotechnology, or even a living starship. Play an Old-Worlder witnessing our fantastic universe for the first time, or a Masquerader taking on different identities each day. Description This second edition runs on an entirely new diceless system. What consequences you are willing to accept in order to win? Or, when you are outmatched, can your failure help your team succeed? Use Plots and Projects to change the world, and force Complications on your characters now to warp the plot in their favor later on. Discover five different futures: To The Stars, where you form a first-contact team reconnecting with the lost seeds of humanity. The Divide, full of espionage and intrigue, where trust is hard to find and the sides are ever shifting. The Powder Keg, a universe tumbling into a war that may mean the end of everything. Sublight, where secret societies champion their causes by transmitting their operatives across the stars. The Patent Office, where your team of Inspectors seeks to protect humanity from its own worst excesses. The future is bright, but not without danger. Come explore it with us. Heroic
Everyday Heroes is a modern-day action roleplaying game designed by Sigfried Trent, Chris "Goober" Ramsley, and D. Todd Scott, with Jeff Grubb - co-designer of Wizards of the Coast's original d20 Modern - serving as design consultant. Published by Evil Genius Games following a 2022 Kickstarter, it takes the 20-year-old d20 Modern concept and rebuilds it entirely on the 5th Edition SRD chassis: same six ability-driven hero archetypes, same "why play an elf wizard when you can play Rambo" pitch, but running on rules 5e players will recognize instantly.  The line has grown around a string of officially licensed cinematic settings - Escape from New York, Highlander, The Crow, Pacific Rim, Kong: Skull Island, Total Recall - letting the system double as an action-movie conversion kit as much as a standalone game.

Teens in Space

Rules-light
Teens in Space is a science-fiction tabletop roleplaying game about a crew of teenagers running their own starship, designed by Jonathan Gilmour and Doug Levandowski. It was originally published by Hunters Entertainment in partnership with Renegade Game Studios in 2019, with Renegade now publishing the line directly. It's a direct reskin of the pair's own Kids on Bikes system, swapping that game's small-town 1980s mystery setting for space exploration while keeping the underlying rules essentially intact. The system directly evolved from Kids on Bikes, the same designers' small-town mystery RPG, reworked here around a crewed starship rather than a bicycle-riding gang of friends. Description Players build teenage crew members from a Trope - Captain, Exiled Royalty, and similar archetypes that set a character's core stats and pose a defining question - paired with a chosen alien species from a long list of options, then take that crew out into a galaxy of malfunctioning ships, first contact, and profit-seeking missions gone sideways.  The Game Master (GM) runs a lightweight system explicitly built to get out of the way: there's no hit-point math to track and no meaningfully different treatment of one piece of gear over another, keeping the focus on the crew's choices and relationships rather than equipment lists or combat math. It's built for a fast, collaborative table - light enough for a first-time player, including kids as young as eight, to pick up and run with immediately.
